Gluttony

Updated: Oct 1, 2022

What is Gluttony?

A biblical definition of gluttony is the habitual giving in to a greedy appetite by overindulging in eating and drinking. Gluttony includes an excessive desire for the pleasure that food and drink give to a person.

Gluttony is one of the seven deadly sins, a collection of seven sins that people identify as some of the biggest stumbling blocks in people’s lives. The seven sins are called deadly, in part, because of their consuming and destructive potential.

God has given us food, drink, and other pleasurable things to enjoy (Genesis 1:29; Ecclesiastes 9:7; 1 Timothy 4:4-5), but the Bible calls for moderation in everything. Unrestrained self-indulgence in any area will lead to deeper entanglement in sin because it represents a rejection of godly self-control and disobedience to the will of God.

Gluttony in the Bible is a form of idolatry. When the desire for food and drink becomes too important to us, it’s a sign that it has become an idol in our lives. Any form of idolatry is a serious offense to God.

The most damaging aspect of overindulgence in food is how it harms our health. The Bible calls us to take care of our bodies and honor God with them (1 Corinthians 6:19–20).

While gluttony is most often tied to food, that lack of self-control can apply to many other places, too. These days, for example, many people are overindulging in devices and screentime, too. TVs, laptops, cell phones, tablets, hand-held gaming systems — you name it! And as a result, we can become more connected to our devices than to the world and the people around us.

Examples of Gluttony

  1. Knowing that you are full and taking one more bite is Gluttony.

  2. Poverty Mindset "I don't want to waste food" So you continue to eat although you are full.

How to overcome Gluttony

  1. Say yes to the truth- Gluttony is a sin!

  2. Your body is a temple, it does not belong to you but to God.

  3. Uncuff from food.

  4. Say no to temptation.

  5. Go workout, see a nutritionist.

  6. Ask God to give you the self-discipline daily to say no to Gluttony.

Prayer: Dear God, I thank you on your revelation on the topic Gluttony. Soften my heart against the spirit of gluttony. Help me to overcome all areas of my life that I have overindulged in and made an idol. We know that we should have no other god before you. Forgive me father. Today, I declare that the spirit of gluttony has no authority in my life. I rebuke the spirit of gluttony in the name of Jesus. I pray, Holy Spirit that you uproot it and cast it into the depths of hell. Lord, undue all mindsets that are not of you. Replace them with your ways. Father, help me to desire foods that are good for me and my health. Help me to not over eat. In Jesus' name, I pray, Amen.
