What is Biblical Wisdom?

Updated: Oct 17, 2022

Wisdom

Biblical Definition of Wisdom: wisdom has to do with behavior as much as with the mind. Understanding how-to-live-in God’s world. To know how to act in accordance with God’s will in the many and varied circumstances of life is to be wise.

True Wisdom: involves the knowledgeable and love-guided practice of godly living.

The wisdom from heaven is all pure, peace, loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy, good fruit, impartial and sincere. Wisdom is a gift from the Holy Spirit, who helps us gain God’s perspective and empowers us to act on it.

Proverbs 3 starts out by introducing us to three teammates to wisdom:

1. Love

2. Faithfulness

3. Trust

-Love: Wisdom without love is like having a set of instructions to put together furniture but lacking the pieces of furniture. If we have no love for God, why would we listen to his wisdom?

-Faithfulness: Wisdom is that quiet plugging along, doing the right thing by God’s design, and in small ways, we change the world around us.

-Trust: without trust, wisdom has no muscle. If we don’t have at least a growing trust in God, it’s going to be very difficult to invest the energy and risk it requires to follow his teaching. Proverbs says “Trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Prayer: Father God, give me the spirit of wisdom and revelation. So that I may know you better. I pray that the eyes of my heart be enlightened (Ephesians 1:17-18) help me to see the hope to which I am called to. Help me to see the riches of your glorious inheritance. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Scripture Reference

Proverbs 3:21-22 My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion; they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck.

Proverbs 3:13 Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding.

Proverbs 4:7 The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.

Proverbs 2:1-15 My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones. Then you will understand what is right and just and fair every good path. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you. Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men, from men whose words are perverse, who have left the straight paths to walk in dark ways, who delight in doing wrong and rejoice in the perverseness of evil, whose paths are crooked and who are devious in their ways.

Proverbs 24:14 Know also that wisdom is like honey for you: If you find it, there is a future hope for you,

and your hope will not be cut off.

Ephesians 1:17-19 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength.
